1990

1990 is Daniel Johnston's eleventh album, released in January 1990 on Shimmy Disc. Written across four years between 1984 and 1988, it was meant to be his first studio record but had to be completed with live recordings and home demos.

Most of it comes from an unstable April 1988 visit to New York, where Johnston recorded at Noise New York with producer Kramer while his mental health deteriorated. It was supposed to be titled 1989, but production ran long. The result is sparse and imperfect, mixing hammered piano and loosely strummed guitar with raw live tracks and closing hymns, and its centerpiece is the redemptive love song "True Love Will Find You in the End".
