Aashiqui 2 is the soundtrack to Mohit Suri's 2013 film of the same name, released on 3 April 2013 through T-Series^[1]. It served as a loose continuation of the 1990 original Aashiqui and, more directly, an Indian reworking of the A Star Is Born story, following a self-destructive singer named Rahul Jaykar who discovers and falls for a rising talent, Aarohi Shirke, as her career ascends and his collapses^[2].

Producer Bhushan Kumar built the eleven-track album around three separate composers rather than one, splitting the songwriting between Jeet Gannguli, who wrote the bulk of the score, and Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari, who each contributed as guest composers^[1]. Mohit Suri has said the songs were written specifically for the film's story rather than assembled from pre-existing material, a departure from the approach taken on the original Aashiqui^[1].

The album became one of the defining Hindi soundtracks of the decade, propelled chiefly by three songs: Mithoon's "Tum Hi Ho," Ankit Tiwari's "Sunn Raha Hai," and Jeet Gannguli's "Chahun Main Ya Naa." "Tum Hi Ho" in particular turned its previously little-known singer, Arijit Singh, into a national star almost overnight, while Ankit Tiwari's own vocal performance on "Sunn Raha Hai" helped establish him as a composer-performer in his own right^[1]. Gannguli, Mithoon, and Tiwari shared the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for their work on the film^[1].

Mithoon's contribution to the soundtrack began almost incidentally. After an extended briefing session, director Mohit Suri was asked to compress the entire concept behind the film's central love theme into a single sentence, and reduced it to the plain assertion that this one person was everything.^[3] The recording itself sat finished for roughly two years before the album reached listeners, with Arijit Singh cast on the strength of his voice alone rather than any existing name recognition, since he was still an emerging singer at the time.^[3] A contemporary review singled out the Mithoon-Singh pairing specifically, predicting the collaboration would recur across future films, a prediction the two more than fulfilled over the following decade of Hindi film music.^[4] Once released, the song built its own momentum quickly, drawing roughly five million YouTube views within its first ten days online and holding the number one position on MTV India's countdown for seven consecutive weeks.^[3]
