Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
About this Album
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is the soundtrack to the 2016 Bollywood romantic drama of the same name, directed and produced by Karan Johar under the Dharma Productions banner.[1] The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a story about one-sided love and the emotional complexity of deep friendship. Johar described writing the script in thirty days and considered the project unusually personal, built around the philosophical claim that unrequited love has its own dignity and transformative power.
The music was composed by Pritam (Pritam Chakraborty), with all lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.[2] The soundtrack spans a wide emotional range: from the sweeping orchestral romance of the title track to the Sufi-infused intensity of "Bulleya," the devotional grief of "Channa Mereya," and the celebratory energy of "The Breakup Song." Pritam described his approach as deliberately avoiding conventional romantic formulas, keeping the sound raw and situated in the film's emotional logic.
The album was released ahead of the film's 28 October 2016 theatrical premiere and performed strongly both commercially and critically. Koimoi awarded it four out of five stars and named it one of the best Bollywood albums of 2016.[2] At the 62nd Filmfare Awards in 2017, Pritam won Best Music Director and Amitabh Bhattacharya won Best Lyricist for "Channa Mereya." Amit Mishra, who sang "Bulleya," won Best Playback Singer (Male) in the popular category and the R.D. Burman Award for New Music Talent. The album also won Album of the Year at the Mirchi Music Awards.[2]
