About this Album

Aethiopes is the 2022 album by billy woods, released April 8, 2022 on Backwoodz Studioz and produced by Preservation. Its title is an ancient Greek term for the people of Africa, and its cover reproduces a 1661 Rembrandt painting of two Black men.[1]

woods describes the record as an exploration of Blackness and Africa as both idea and reality, the diaspora, and the notion of "the other."[2] Reviewers heard a larger narrative about slavery and historical immigration, with ships and death recurring as images.[3]

It earned a Metacritic score of 81 and appeared on numerous 2022 year-end lists.[1]
