At the Cut
About this Album
*At the Cut* is Vic Chesnutt's 2009 album, released September 21, 2009 on Constellation Records.[1] It was recorded in December 2008, mixed in April 2009, and produced by Guy Picciotto of Fugazi, with a band drawn from the Montreal circle around the label, including Efrim Menuck, Thierry Amar, Jessica Moss and Nadia Moss.[1]
Chesnutt had hoped to make something close to a sequel to *North Star Deserter* (2007), but said the record became shockingly personal, something like a memoir.[2] It includes "Coward," "Chinaberry Tree," "Philip Guston," "Flirted with You All My Life," "It Is What It Is" and the dream-derived "Granny."[1][2]
It was his penultimate release. Chesnutt died on December 25, 2009, a few months after it appeared.[1] Critics praised its blend of unease and warmth, and AllMusic gave it four stars.[1]
