About this Album

Be the Cowboy is Mitski's fifth studio album, released on August 17, 2018, through Dead Oceans.[1] It was recorded with producer Patrick Hyland in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Los Angeles.[1]

Mitski described the album as an experiment in narrative and fiction, built around the image of a lone performer under a spotlight, with most tracks avoiding layered vocals.[1] It earned an 87 on Metacritic, topped several year-end lists and became her first album to chart on the Billboard 200.[1]

The album's second single, "Nobody," a disco-tinged song written alone in Kuala Lumpur over the holidays, became its emotional center and later a TikTok hit.[2]
