About this Album

Blackstar is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by David Bowie, released on 8 January 2016, his sixty-ninth birthday. He died two days later.

Bowie produced it with Tony Visconti and built the sound around a group of New York jazz musicians led by saxophonist Donny McCaslin, steering away from rock toward looser, groove-driven material. Visconti has said the band listened to Kendrick Lamar during the sessions for his genre-blending approach.

Critics received it as one of Bowie's strongest late works, and many read it as a deliberate farewell, with the ten-minute title track as its most cryptic and ambitious piece.
