Cheap Thrills

About this Album

Cheap Thrills was released by Columbia Records on August 12, 1968.[1] It was the second studio album by Big Brother and the Holding Company and Janis Joplin's last with the band.[1]

Producer John Simon recorded most of it in Hollywood and New York between March and May 1968, then added crowd noise so it sounded live. Only "Ball and Chain" came from a real concert, at Winterland.[1] Robert Crumb drew the cover, and the original title idea, Sex, Dope and Cheap Thrills, was rejected by the label.[1]

Critics were divided at first, but the album spent eight nonconsecutive weeks at number one and went double platinum.[1] It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007 and the National Recording Registry in 2013.[1]
