About this Album

Desire is Bob Dylan's 1976 album, released on January 5 through Columbia. It was recorded between July and October 1975, mostly in New York, with producer Don DeVito. The early sessions were chaotic, but the smaller group that gathered on July 30 became the core of the Rolling Thunder Revue touring band.

Most of the songs were written with the theater director and lyricist Jacques Levy, and the record leans on long story-songs, from the Rubin Carter protest song Hurricane to the gangster portrait Joey and the symbolic travelogue Isis. Scarlet Rivera's violin and Emmylou Harris's harmonies define its sound, and the closing song is a tribute to Dylan's wife, Sara.

Desire spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard album chart and was certified double platinum in the United States. Reviews were generally favorable, though the sympathetic treatment of the gangster in Joey drew criticism.
