About this Album
Every Bad is the second album by Porridge Radio, the Brighton band led by Dana Margolin. It was released on 13 March 2020 by Secretly Canadian[1], following the band's 2016 self-recorded debut, Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers[2].
The album was made by a four-piece after a guitarist left the group[2]. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize and earned strong reviews, with aggregate scores in the mid-eighties out of a hundred[1]. Critics noted repetition as one of its central devices[3].
Margolin has called the record an unfinished sentence, and describes it as an attempt to find hope inside difficult and sad things[2]. Much of it is shaped by the sea: Brighton's beach was a refuge for her when she felt low[2]. The single "Circling" was one of the last water songs she wrote for it[1]. The album reached number 11 on the UK Independent Albums chart and appeared on year-end lists from Pitchfork, NME and BrooklynVegan[3].
Frontwoman Dana Margolin has called the album an unfinished sentence, and has said it aims to find hope inside difficult experiences[4]. She has said she only noticed its shared threads of depression, empathy and the sea about a week after release[5]. Its centrepiece single βLilacβ appeared in December 2019, as the band signed to Secretly Canadian[6].
