Half Girlfriend
About this Album
Half Girlfriend is the soundtrack album for the 2017 Bollywood romantic drama of the same name, directed by Mohit Suri and starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. The film was adapted from Chetan Bhagat's bestselling 2014 novel and released in cinemas on May 19, 2017, through Balaji Motion Pictures and Zee Entertainment. It earned a moderate commercial return despite receiving mixed-to-negative critical reviews, with critics largely faulting the screenplay while praising the music.
The soundtrack was released through Zee Music Company and brought together compositions from multiple producers including Mithoon, Tanishk Bagchi, Farhan Saeed, and Rahul Mishra. It was widely regarded as the strongest element of the entire production. Mithoon's contribution -- setting a sixteen-year-old private poem by lyricist Manoj Muntashir to music without altering a single word -- produced "Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga," one of the decade's most enduring Bollywood ballads, eventually surpassing one billion views on YouTube.
The album received recognition at multiple awards ceremonies. "Baarish" won Song of the Year at the Zee Cine Awards 2017, while "Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga" won Listener's Choice Song of the Year at the 10th Mirchi Music Awards (2018). The soundtrack established Half Girlfriend as a rare case where a film's music outlasted -- and outperformed -- the film itself in the public memory.
