About this Album

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You was released by Atlantic Records on March 10, 1967, and was Aretha Franklin's first album for the label after she left Columbia.[1]

Sessions started at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After an altercation involving her then-husband Ted White, a trumpeter, and studio owner Rick Hall, producer Jerry Wexler moved the remaining sessions to Atlantic's New York studio and flew in the Muscle Shoals musicians to finish tracks including "Respect" and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man."[1]

The record opens with "Respect" and closes with a cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." It reached number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B albums chart for fourteen weeks.[1] Early reviews were mixed, but it has since been ranked 13th on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.[1]
