About this Album

I See a Darkness is the sixth studio album by Will Oldham and the first released under the name Bonnie "Prince" Billy. It was released on January 19, 1999, and runs about 38 minutes across eleven songs.[3]

The record is spare and intimate, built around acoustic guitar and hushed vocals. Contributors credited include Colin Gagon, Paul Oldham and David Pajo.[3] Critics were largely warm: Uncut called it Oldham's most approachable album to date, Pitchfork later ranked it among the best albums of the 1990s, and it appears in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[3]

Reviewers have noted its winter mood and its focus on death and unhappiness, although some found the gloom overdone.[6][7] Oldham himself has said he does not want bleakness on a record and prefers to think of his music as group therapy.[8]
