About this Album

Recorded in February 2004 at Presto! Recording Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska, and produced by Mike Mogis, this folk and country leaning album features guest vocals from Emmylou Harris and Jim James. It was released on Saddle Creek Records on January 25, 2005, the same day as the electronic companion Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, and reached number 10 on the Billboard 200.

Oberst has said the band deliberately imitated 1970s folk, recording to tape and bringing in Emmylou Harris.[1] The record earned a Metacritic score of 85 and a gold certification in the US and UK, and its quiet single "First Day of My Life" became the band's best-known song.[2]
