About this Album

The Kalank Original Motion Picture Soundtrack accompanies Abhishek Varman's 2019 Bollywood epic set in 1945 pre-Partition North India, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Music is composed by Pritam with all ten tracks written by lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya.

The album was widely anticipated as Pritam's return to prominence after a largely inactive 2018, and critics greeted it warmly. BizAsia predicted it could be "the biggest soundtrack of 2019," while Bollywood Hungama gave it 3.5 out of 5, noting it was "a very good soundtrack" helped greatly by Bhattacharya's writing. Bollyspice awarded it 4 out of 5, praising Pritam for making instrumentation choices that reflect the narrative rather than simply the period setting.

The sound draws on period-appropriate instruments including sitar, rabab, qanun, and sarangi alongside orchestral strings and piano, evoking the syncretic musical culture of pre-Partition North India. The title track, performed by Arijit Singh and in a duet version with Shilpa Rao, won the 65th Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. The album received 7 nominations at that ceremony in total.
