Like a Prayer
About this Album
Like a Prayer (1989) is Madonna's fourth studio album, released on Sire and Warner Bros. in March 1989 and produced by Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray and Prince.[2] It is widely seen as the record where critics began to take her seriously as an artist.
The lyrics deal with her Catholic upbringing, the collapse of her marriage to Sean Penn, her mother's death and her relationship with her father, and the album is dedicated to her mother.[2][3] Leonard has said the sessions ran three or four times longer than usual because Madonna kept breaking down.[2]
It reached number one in the United States and in about twenty countries, spawned the singles "Like a Prayer," "Express Yourself," "Cherish," "Oh Father" and "Dear Jessie," and has sold more than fifteen million copies.[2] J. D. Considine of Rolling Stone called it as close to art as pop gets.[2]
