Midnight Love
About this Album
Midnight Love is Marvin Gaye's sixteenth studio album, released on November 8, 1982, roughly a month after he finally severed ties with Motown Records, the label that had defined his entire career. He recorded it between October 1981 and August 1982 in studios in Belgium, Germany, and California, while living in Ostend on the Belgian coast under the sponsorship of concert promoter Freddy Cousaert, who had offered him a quiet escape from drug addiction, depression, and a worsening financial crisis built on unpaid taxes and alimony.
Signed to a new three-album deal with CBS Records reportedly worth more than two million dollars once the buyout of his Motown contract was included, Gaye set out to make something unapologetically commercial after years of increasingly introspective, difficult records. The result blended soul and funk with reggae rhythms and synthesizer-driven production, a sound shaped by his European surroundings and by his new independence from Motown's house style. The album paired the sensuality of its lead single, Sexual Healing, with more spiritual material such as Joy, a tribute to his father's ministry, holding the same tension between the sacred and the sensual that ran through Gaye's whole career.
Midnight Love became one of the biggest comebacks in R&B history, selling more than six million copies worldwide, topping the Billboard R&B albums chart, and earning triple-platinum certification in the United States. NME named it Album of the Year for 1982, and Rolling Stone later ranked it among the best albums of the 1980s. Critic Robert Christgau called it Gaye's best record, arguing that its concentrated focus on physical desire was precisely what made it work.
