Psychopomp
About this Album
Psychopomp is the 2016 debut album by Japanese Breakfast, the solo project of Michelle Zauner. It was released on April 1, 2016 through Yellow K Records and reissued internationally on August 19 of that year after she signed with Dead Oceans.[1]
Recorded in 2014 and 2015 in Eugene, Oregon, while Zauner was caring for her ill mother, the record deals with grief, regret, and loneliness through sonically upbeat, shoegaze-tinged pop. Its title comes from a mythic guide of souls she found in a Jung essay.[1] The album received generally favorable reviews, with Pitchfork, Spin, and PopMatters each scoring it 7 out of 10 or higher.[1]
