About this Album
Rat Saw God is the album from Wednesday released on April 7, 2023 on Dead Oceans. It was recorded at Drop of Sun in Asheville, North Carolina, and produced by Alex Farrar.[1] It was the last album to feature bassist Margo Schultz, who also painted the cover.[1]
The record blends indie rock, shoegaze, alt-country and grunge, and critics praised its portrait of life in the American South.[1] It earned a Metacritic score of 89 from 16 reviews, an 8.8 from Pitchfork, and the top spot on year-end lists at Paste and Stereogum.[1] Its singles were "Bull Believer," "Chosen to Deserve," "Bath County" and "TV in the Gas Pump."[1]
It was recorded under tight studio time at Drop of Sun, a favor extended before the band had a major label, and the band signed with Dead Oceans on the final day of recording.[1] Critics praised its range, from grunge and shoegaze to country balladry, and its collage-like lyrics.[2]
