Sign o' the Times
About this Album
Sign o' the Times (1987) is Prince's ninth studio album and his first solo release after dissolving the Revolution. It grew out of shelved projects (Dream Factory and Camille) that were combined into a planned triple album, Crystal Ball. Warner Bros. declined to issue a triple, so Prince cut it to a double and added the title track.
Built largely on the Linn LM-1 drum machine and the Fairlight CMI, it ranges across funk, soul, rock, and psychedelic pop while taking on social issues and the tension between sexuality and spirituality. It was voted album of the year in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, and is widely regarded as Prince's masterpiece.
