About this Album
Somersault is the third studio album by Beach Fossils, released June 2, 2017, on Bayonet Records, the label Dustin Payseur started in 2015.[1] It followed 2013's Clash the Truth after the band's longest gap between records.[1]
Payseur co-produced with Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, recording to analog tape across sessions in Brooklyn, Manhattan, upstate New York and Los Angeles, with strings and woodwinds added to the band's sound.[1] Guests include Rachel Goswell of Slowdive and Cities Aviv.[1]
Thematically the record is more personal and self-critical than its predecessors, dealing with friendship, depression and the aftermath of the 2016 election.[2] Metacritic scores it 81 out of 100.[1]
