About this Album

Songs of Love and Hate is Leonard Cohen's third studio album, released on March 19, 1971, and produced by Bob Johnston. Most of it was recorded at Columbia Studio A in Nashville in September 1970, with further work in London and one track taken from a live set at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Cohen later described the period as a difficult one marked by a long depression. Critics were largely enthusiastic, and the record reached number four in the UK, though it stalled at number 145 in the US. Cohen himself later called it over-produced.

The album moves between tenderness and bitterness, and it includes the letter-song Famous Blue Raincoat.
