Substance
About this Album
Substance is Joy Division's singles compilation, released by Factory Records on 11 July 1988 as a companion to the similarly titled collection from New Order.[1] It gathers the four non-album singles ("Transmission", "Komakino", "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere"), most of their B-sides, and tracks from early EPs and Factory samplers, with recording dates running from December 1977 to March 1980.[1]
It reached number 7 in the UK, was certified Gold, and became the band's only entry on the Billboard 200, at number 146.[1] AllMusic gave it five stars, Robert Christgau a B+, and Uncut 8 out of 10.[1] Post-Punk.com calls it perhaps the best entry point to the band.[2] The cover uses green lettering in Wim Crouwel's New Alphabet.[1]
