The Dance

Recorded in a single night, May 23, 1997, in front of a few hundred invited guests at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, The Dance reunited Fleetwood Mac's classic five-person lineup, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks, for the first time on record since 1987's Tango in the Night. Filmed as an MTV concert special, it paired the band's best-known material with four newly written songs, including one contribution each from Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks and two from Lindsey Buckingham.

The album's most talked-about moment remains its performance of “Silver Springs,” a Stevie Nicks song written a generation earlier during the Rumours sessions and cut from that album for reasons of length and pacing. Performed live for the first time in front of the full band and a television audience, it became the emotional centerpiece of the reunion, with Nicks singing directly to Lindsey Buckingham, the former partner the song was written about.

The reunion was a commercial triumph: The Dance debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, the band's first chart-topping release since 1982, sold roughly a million copies within its first two months, and eventually surpassed six million copies worldwide. It stands as one of the best-selling live albums in American chart history and reintroduced the classic lineup to a new generation of listeners.
