The Overload
About this Album
The Overload is the debut album by Leeds post-punk band Yard Act, released on 21 January 2022 through Island Records. It was produced by Ali Chant, known for his work with PJ Harvey.[1]
Thematically, the record sketches modern Britain through character-driven spoken-word storytelling. Frontman James Smith has described an anti-capitalist slant running through the songs, and the album plays out the tension between obeying the rules we are given in order to stay afloat and rejecting them entirely.[2][3] Critics praised its wit and compared it to The Fall and Sleaford Mods.[4]
The album debuted at number two on the UK albums chart and topped the physical sales chart.[1] It was nominated for the Mercury Prize.[5]
