About this Album
To See the Next Part of the Dream is the second studio album by Parannoul, an anonymous solo musician from Seoul. It was self-released on Bandcamp on 23 February 2021, recorded over several years on one old computer in a bedroom, with virtual instruments and vocals captured on a phone.[1]
Parannoul has described it as a concept album about the future of an adult who only dreams about the past while denying reality.[1] Its fuzzed-out shoegaze and emo sound, its clipping volume, and its references to early 2000s Japanese media, including the film All About Lily Chou-Chou, made it a cult favorite and a fixture on 2021 year-end lists.[1][2]
The record opens with Beautiful World, which samples dialogue from the film All About Lily Chou-Chou and sets up the album's protagonist, a fictional young aspiring musician caught between his ideals and his reality.[3] The album's title comes from a line in the manga Hoshikuzu Nina, and Parannoul has described making the music without regard for popularity as a form of healing.[3]
