About this Album

Verities & Balderdash is Harry Chapin's fourth studio album, released in 1974 on Elektra Records. It became his most commercially successful record, certified Gold in December 1974, and remains the album most closely associated with his legacy.

The album's title reflects Chapin's characteristic duality: "verities" for the earnest storytelling truths he pursued, and "balderdash" for the absurdist humor that balanced his more serious work. Musically, it built on the strengths of his previous album Short Stories, blending folk, rock, and narrative balladry in a style that was distinctly his own.

The album's defining track, "Cat's in the Cradle," became Chapin's only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top in December 1974. A follow-up single, "I Wanna Learn a Love Song," also charted, reaching number 44 on the Hot 100 and number 7 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Critics praised the album as perhaps Chapin's finest to that point, noting both its musical and lyrical range.
