About this Album

Versions of Modern Performance is the debut album by Chicago trio Horsegirl, released on Matador on June 3, 2022.[1] It was written while the members were in high school and recorded in summer 2021 at Electrical Audio with producer John Agnello.[1]

Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo plays guitar on one track and Steve Shelley adds percussion on another.[1] Critics praised its nineties indie sound, with a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100.[1]

The album closes with "Billy", the first single, which has Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on percussion.[1] The song grew out of a year of near-daily writing in a basement, with detuned guitar and a vocal about an invented character.[2]
