About this Album

Wave is the fourth studio album credited to Patti Smith and the third and last billed to the Patti Smith Group. It was recorded in 1979 at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, produced and engineered by Todd Rundgren, and released on May 17, 1979 on Arista Records.[1]

The record leans toward melodic pop rock and balances romantic warmth, shown in "Frederick" and "Dancing Barefoot", with ambivalence about stardom.[1][2] Reviews were mixed, with Robert Christgau giving it a B+ and AllMusic calling it her slightest effort, but it reached number 18 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 in France.[1] Smith left music for most of the following decade, returning in 1988.[2]
