Biography

Angus and Julia Stone are an Australian singer-songwriter duo made up of siblings born in Sydney, Julia in April 1984 and Angus two years later[4][5]. They grew up in the coastal suburb of Newport on Sydney's Northern Beaches, the children of two folk musicians, and family gatherings often turned into informal bands, with Angus on trombone, their older sister Catherine on saxophone, and Julia on trumpet[1]. Angus picked up guitar while recovering from a snowboarding injury after a stint working as a labourer, and it was around that period, in early 2006, that the siblings began writing and performing together[1].

Their debut EP, Chocolates and Cigarettes, arrived that August, and the duo's first full-length, A Book Like This, followed in 2007[8][2]. Their breakthrough came with 2010's Down the Way, which swept five of its nine ARIA Award nominations, including Album of the Year, with the single "Big Jet Plane" later going platinum in Australia[6][7].

The duo's sound has continued to evolve across each subsequent record. Their self-titled 2014 album was produced by Rick Rubin in Malibu, who publicly called the result "extraordinary," and was followed by 2017's Snow and 2024's Cape Forestier[2][3]. Their seventh studio album, Karaoke Bar, arrived on September 4, 2026, written and recorded across Greece, France, and Australia, and continues the pair's pattern of stretching their acoustic folk foundation into new textures, this time synth-pop, psychedelia, and alt-country[9].
