Biography

Arthur Russell (born Charles Arthur Russell Jr., May 21, 1951, in Oskaloosa, Iowa) was an American cellist, composer, producer and singer who worked across the avant-garde, folk and disco scenes of New York.[1]

He studied Indian classical music and Western composition in San Francisco before moving to New York in 1973, where he ran music programming at The Kitchen and played cello alongside Allen Ginsberg[1]. He recorded club music under names such as Dinosaur L and Loose Joints, and co-founded Sleeping Bag Records in 1981[1].

His 1986 album World of Echo was his only full solo album released in his lifetime. He died of AIDS-related illness on April 4, 1992, leaving more than a thousand tapes that fueled a growing posthumous reputation[1],[2].
