Biography
DMA'S are a three-piece indie rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, formed in 2012.[1] The band consists of Tommy O'Dell (lead vocals), Matt Mason (lead guitar), and Johnny Took (rhythm guitar). Took and Mason had previously played together in a Sydney alt-country and bluegrass outfit called Little Bastard before founding DMA'S as a side project that quickly became their primary focus.
The trio began as bedroom experimenters, crafting demos in Took's home with no immediate ambition for live performance.[1] In February 2014, they signed to I Oh You and released their debut single "Delete," which charted at #88 on the ARIA Charts. Their self-titled EP followed later that year, drawing immediate comparisons to the Manchester indie scene of the early 1990s for its Stone Roses-inflected guitar textures and O'Dell's distinctive vocal delivery.
Their debut album Hills End arrived in 2016 and established the band's anthemic, melodic identity. That same year their triple j Like a Version cover of Cher's "Believe" went viral, ultimately reaching #6 in the Hottest 100 and later topping triple j's Hottest 100 Like A Versions of All Time with over 10.3 million YouTube views.[1]
Three further studio albums followed: For Now (2018), The Glow (2020, UK Top 5), and How Many Dreams? (2023, UK Top 5). All four albums charted in the ARIA Top 10. The band has accumulated over 500 million streams globally and won Best Group at the 2023 ARIA Awards.[1]
In 2026, the year marking the tenth anniversary of Hills End, DMA'S announced a new era with "My Baby's Place," their first entirely self-produced single, recorded at the band's own studio in Glebe, Sydney, with producer Lach Bostock.[2] The move represented a return to the band's earliest instincts, reconnecting with the DIY spirit of their bedroom-demo origins.[4]
