Biography

Don Toliver, born Caleb Zackery Toliver on June 12, 1994, grew up in the Alief neighborhood of Houston, Texas[1]. His father sang and rapped within Houston's independent music scene, circulating in the orbit of Swishahouse, the label that helped define the city's psychedelic, slowed-down rap aesthetic[1]. Growing up immersed in the sounds of DJ Screw, UGK, and Scarface, Toliver absorbed Houston's sensory approach to rap from childhood.

His path to mainstream recognition ran through Travis Scott. After dropping his debut solo mixtape Donny Womack in 2018 on the same day Scott released Astroworld, Toliver appeared on Scott's album and was quickly signed to Cactus Jack Records in a joint venture with Atlantic Records[1]. Singles "No Idea" (2019) and "After Party" (2020) both went triple platinum and became viral TikTok staples, establishing his signature blend of melodic trap and R&B.

Toliver released five studio albums: Heaven or Hell (2020), Life of a Don (2021), Love Sick (2023), Hardstone Psycho (2024), and OCTANE (2026)[1]. OCTANE debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 162,000 equivalent album units, his strongest commercial week ever[3]. The album was created during a period of significant personal change that included new fatherhood[4], with portions recorded at a studio atop Mount Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains, a location Toliver connected to the patient, meditative quality of his creative process[6]. His high-profile relationship with singer Kali Uchis has been a visible influence on his romantic themes[5].

Musically, Toliver cites Sade, Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, Lenny Kravitz, and N.E.R.D. alongside Houston legends DJ Screw and Scarface as formative influences[1]. His psychedelic croon, emotional vulnerability, and cinematic production sensibility have made him one of the defining voices of melodic trap.
