Biography
Khruangbin is a trio from Houston, Texas, whose sound blends 1960s Thai rock, Iranian pop, and dub with American soul and psychedelia.[1] The name is the Thai word for airplane, chosen by bassist Laura Lee for the band's first gig.[1]
Guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson met in 2004 in Houston while playing in a church gospel band.[1] Speer met Laura Lee in 2007, and a 2010 tour led the two of them to form the group, recording in a barn in Burton, Texas before Johnson joined on drums.[1]
Albums include The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), Con Todo el Mundo (2018), and Mordechai (2020).[1] In 2020 they released the Texas Sun EP with Leon Bridges, followed by Texas Moon in 2022, which reached number 23 on the Billboard 200.[1][2]
