Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails is the project of Michael Trent Reznor, born May 17, 1965, in Mercer, Pennsylvania, where he grew up playing piano before picking up other instruments as a teenager.^[6] He spent a year studying computer engineering at Allegheny College before dropping out and relocating to Cleveland, Ohio, where he took a job as an assistant engineer and janitor at a local recording studio, using unused studio hours to record his own material.^[6]

Working largely alone and playing every instrument himself, Reznor began recording songs influenced by Ministry and Skinny Puppy under the name Nine Inch Nails in 1988. He initially hoped only to land a 12-inch single on a small European label, but when he sent demo tapes to American labels, nearly all of them offered him a deal; he signed with TVT Records, which released his debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, in 1989.^[6]

That album built momentum slowly, spending more than two years on the Billboard charts and eventually selling over a million copies, boosted by club play for the single "Down in It" and MTV exposure for "Head Like a Hole." A 1991 slot on the inaugural Lollapalooza tour, after Reznor recruited keyboardist James Woolley for the touring band, significantly widened the group's audience ahead of the more commercially explosive follow-up, The Downward Spiral, in 1994.^[6]

Reznor recorded most of that album in a Benedict Canyon house he named Le Pig, notable as the property where the Manson Family carried out the 1969 murders of Sharon Tate and four others. He has said the house's grim history drew him in more than repelled him at the time, though a later conversation with Tate's sister prompted him to reconsider how casually he had treated that history.^[4]

Across his catalog, Reznor has described a consistent creative instinct: pairing cold, precise electronic production with a deliberately imperfect, human vocal performance so the two forces stay in visible tension rather than resolving into either pure machine or pure feeling.^[2]
