Preoccupations

Group

Biography

Preoccupations are a Canadian post-punk band fronted by bassist and vocalist Matt Flegel, with drummer Mike Wallace.[1] Flegel and Wallace previously played in Women, a Calgary group that split after an onstage fight in 2010 and the 2012 death of guitarist Christopher Reimer.[1]

They then formed Viet Cong. After criticism of that name, including a cancelled show at Oberlin College, the band announced in April 2016 that it would become Preoccupations.[1] Their self-titled album followed in September 2016 on Flemish Eye and Jagjaguwar.[2]

The lineup for the 2016 album was Flegel on bass and vocals, guitarists Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen, and Wallace on drums. Producer Graham Walsh, of Holy Fuck, worked with them again.[3] Munro has said that he and Flegel both went through the end of long-term relationships around the time of the rename, and that the band lived without a home base, with their belongings in storage.[3]
