Biography

Quelle Chris is the stage name of Gavin Christopher Tennille, a rapper, producer, and songwriter based in Detroit, Michigan.[4] He first emerged in the city's hip-hop scene through the group Wasted Youth, later formed Crown Nation with Denmark Vessey, and wrote songs for Danny Brown before focusing on his own solo career.[4]

His solo albums include Shotgun & Sleek Rifle (2011), Ghost at the Finish Line (2013), Innocent Country (2015, with Chris Keys), Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often (2017), Guns (2019), Innocent Country 2 (2020), and Deathfame (2022), most of them on Mello Music Group.[4] He has also produced for artists including Pharoahe Monch, Diamond District, and Open Mike Eagle.[4]

His 2017 album, which opens with the self-love chant "Buddies," was praised for pairing humor with introspection, tracing a path from performed confidence to genuine self-acceptance.[2] His longtime partner and collaborator is the rapper Jean Grae; they married in 2018 and released the joint album Everything's Fine that year.[4] In 2023 he was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year as a contributor to Lizzo's Special.[4]
