Biography

R.E.M. was an American alternative rock band[1] formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980.[2] Consisting of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), and Bill Berry (drums),[3] the band helped define the alternative rock genre[4] and became one of the most commercially successful acts of the late 1980s and 1990s.[5]

The four members met while attending the University of Georgia in Athens.[3] After years building a devoted following through relentless touring and a string of critically acclaimed albums on the independent label I.R.S. Records, R.E.M. signed with Warner Bros. in 1988 and broke through to mainstream audiences. Their 1991 album Out of Time sold over 18 million copies worldwide, propelled by the inescapable single "Losing My Religion."[1]

Rather than capitalize on that commercial momentum, the band followed with the deliberately somber Automatic for the People (1992), an introspective album suffused with themes of mortality and loss. The record featured orchestral string arrangements by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and produced enduring tracks including "Everybody Hurts," a song written primarily by drummer Bill Berry as an anti-suicide anthem that became one of the band's most culturally significant works.[6] Many critics consider it R.E.M.'s finest album.

Bill Berry departed the band in 1997, two years after suffering a brain aneurysm on stage during a concert in Lausanne, Switzerland. The remaining three members continued as a trio until officially disbanding in September 2011.[1] R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, cementing their legacy as one of the most influential bands in rock history.[4]
