Biography
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, to a Colombian mother and a father of Lebanese descent. That mixed heritage would prove central to her artistic identity: the Caribbean rhythms of Colombia's coast, the traditions of the Arab world, and the global currents of rock and pop would all find their way into her music.[4]
She began writing songs as a child and signed her first record contract with Sony Music Colombia at age thirteen. Her early albums, including "Magia" (1991) and "Peligro" (1993), were modest commercial efforts, but her third album "Pies Descalzos" (1995) broke through across Latin America and established her as a major figure in Spanish-language pop. "Laundry Service" (2001), her first fully English-language album, made her a global star, driven by the worldwide hit "Whenever, Wherever."
For much of the 2010s she balanced commercial pop success with a high-profile personal life, including an eleven-year relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Pique, with whom she had two sons. The couple's separation in June 2022, amid widely reported allegations of infidelity, became one of the most discussed celebrity splits of the decade.[7] Shakira relocated from Barcelona to Miami and channeled the experience into her most critically acclaimed work in years.
Her 2024 album "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" (Women No Longer Cry) became the foundation for the highest-grossing Hispanic concert tour of all time, generating $421.6 million across 82 stadium shows.[1] It won Best Latin Pop Album at the 67th Grammy Awards in 2025. That same year, reflecting on her journey, she told attendees: "Life hasn't always been kind, but it's been a good teacher."[7]
In 2026, she received a nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, recognition of a career spanning over three decades of genre-bending work.[1] Her 2026 single "ALGO TU," recorded in her hometown of Barranquilla with fellow Colombian artist Beele, marked a creative homecoming: a return to the Caribbean culture at the root of everything she has built.
