Bonny Light Horseman

The self-titled debut of the trio of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman was released on January 24, 2020, on 37d03d, the label run by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner.^[1] It was recorded partly at the site of a former broadcasting complex in Berlin and finished at Dreamland Recording Studios near Woodstock, New York.^[1]

Nearly every track is a traditional song, with "Mountain Rain" the lone original.^[1] The members have described the project as treating folk songs as a living art form rather than a research project, and call the sound astral folk.^[2] The album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album and won the Libera Award for Best Americana Record in 2021.^[1]
