Biography
Bonny Light Horseman is an American folk trio made up of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman. Mitchell is the songwriter behind Hadestown, Johnson previously played in Fruit Bats and The Shins, and Kaufman has worked with The National, Hiss Golden Messenger and Josh Ritter.[1]
The three first played together at the 2018 Eaux Claires festival, invited by its founders Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner, and then formed the band.[1] Their self-titled debut arrived in January 2020 on 37d03d, reworking traditional songs alongside one original, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album and a Libera Award for Best Americana Record.[1][2] They followed it with Rolling Golden Holy in 2022 and the double album Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free in 2024 on Jagjaguwar.[1]
The members describe their music as astral folk, treating traditional songs as a living art form rather than a research project.[3]
