About this Album

Cardinal is the second studio album by Pinegrove, released February 12, 2016, on Run for Cover Records. Recorded in the basements of Evan Stephens Hall's and Zack Levine's parents' homes in Montclair, New Jersey, with additional recording in Chicago, the eight-song record circles place, distance, travel and return.[1] Hall wrote semi-autobiographical lyrics about love, space and distance, including platonic and familial love.[1]

Hall designed the cover, which shows two red squares on a gray background. "Old Friends" opened the album and was released as a single on January 5, 2016.[1] Reviews were warm: Pitchfork gave it 80 and the aggregate sits around 80.[2]

The fourth track, "Aphasia," takes its name from the language disorder and stages a confession that swells and then falls apart.[3]
