Biography
Pinegrove is an American indie rock band from Montclair, New Jersey, led by songwriter Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zack Levine, who met as children and grew up around musician parents.[1]
Their self-released 2012 debut Meridian drew enough local attention that Hall moved to Brooklyn, only to find the city too loud for writing and return to Montclair, where the band's home base and supportive multi-generational music community remain.[1] Their 2016 album Cardinal, recorded in family basements and released on Run for Cover Records, brought them wider attention for its earnest, conversational songwriting that blends emo, indie rock and alt-country.[1][2]
In 2017 the band toured heavily and headlined the Newport Folk Festival, then released "Intrepid" on November 1 as the lead single from their third album, Skylight.[3] Later that month Hall addressed an allegation of sexual coercion, and the band announced a hiatus and cancelled a tour and the album's planned release.[4] Pinegrove left Run for Cover and self-released Skylight on September 28, 2018.[4]
