Dilwale
About this Album
Dilwale is the original motion picture soundtrack to Rohit Shetty's 2015 Bollywood action-romance film of the same name, composed by Pritam with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Released on 4 December 2015 by Sony Music India, two weeks before the film's theatrical debut, the album became one of the most commercially successful Bollywood soundtracks of that year.
The album was conceived as a companion to a film built around the reunion of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, one of Hindi cinema's most beloved on-screen pairings. Pritam described his approach in interviews as consciously tailored to serve two distinct emotional registers within the film: the deeper, more meditative love story of the older protagonists (played by SRK and Kajol) and the lighter, more playful romance of the younger couple (Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon). This structural decision gave the album its unusually wide emotional range.
Critical reception was warm. Music Aloud awarded the album 8/10 and called it Pritam's best work of the year, praising the deliberate nostalgic palette -- violins, mandolin, and orchestrations evoking the Hindi film songs of the 1960s -- as a conscious homage to the golden era that the SRK-Kajol pairing itself represented. Bollywood Hungama rated the album 3.5/5 and called it "a winner all the way." The lead single "Gerua" became the first Bollywood song to cross 100 million YouTube views in the shortest time at that point, and later won Song of the Year at the 8th Mirchi Music Awards.
Pritam earned a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Music Director for this work. Vocalists on the album include Arijit Singh, Antara Mitra, Amit Mishra, Neha Kakkar, Kanika Kapoor, Siddharth Mahadevan, and Benny Dayal, among others.
