ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH
About this Album
ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH is the fourth studio album by Philadelphia band Spirit of the Beehive, released April 9, 2021 on Saddle Creek Records[1]. It was written and recorded between April and July 2020, in the early months of the pandemic, with the trio of Zack Schwartz, Rivka Ravede and Corey Wichlin trading files remotely[1][4].
Schwartz has said the album's throughline came from a tire blowout on tour, after which he imagined the band had died and the record became a series of memories. Its themes include physical and psychic death and the pressure on underground artists to produce constantly[2]. Critics described a fragmented, nightmare-tinged blend of shoegaze, psych-folk and experimental electronics[5], and it earned a Pitchfork Best New Music designation[1].
