Next Thing
About this Album
Next Thing is the second proper studio album by Frankie Cosmos, the project of songwriter Greta Kline. It was released on April 1, 2016, through Bayonet Records, and runs fifteen songs in just under half an hour.[1] Hunter Davidsohn produced it.[1]
It was Kline's first album made with a full band, with Gabby Smith on keyboards and vocals, David Maine on bass, and Luke Pension on drums.[2] Where her earlier Bandcamp recordings were often sparse and solo, this record gave the same diaristic songs a cleaner, fuller sound.[3][4] Four songs arrived as singles beforehand: "Outside with the Cuties," "Sinister," "Is It Possible/Sleep Song," and "On the Lips."[1]
Critics heard a record about friendship, crushes, growing up, and the disillusionment that follows, with tempo changes and bursts of dance rhythm packed into songs that rarely pass three minutes.[3][4] Spin framed it around growth and the tension between innocence and anxiety.[2] A tenth anniversary edition arrived for Record Store Day 2026 with three previously unreleased demos.[5]
