Biography
Greta Kline, who performs as Frankie Cosmos, is an American singer and songwriter born in New York City on March 21, 1994.[1] Her project began as a solo venture and became a band-based act with the 2014 album Zentropy.[2]
Her writing draws on the conversational poetry of Frank O'Hara, the do-it-yourself ethic of K Records, and the New York anti-folk scene.[1] The band signed to Sub Pop in April 2017 and released Vessel in 2018.[3]
Kline grew up in New York as the daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, started playing guitar in middle school, and first posted songs online under the name Ingrid Superstar.[4] She became Frankie Cosmos in 2011, when she began making music with Aaron Maine of Porches.[4]
Her early recordings were made before she had a band, just her voice and guitar, and she released dozens of projects on Bandcamp, often in quick succession.[4][5] Next Thing (2016) was her first album with a full band, and its song "Fool" later found a new audience after it was used in the animated series Hilda and spread through a TikTok trend around January 2021.[4][6]
