Oshin
About this Album
Oshin is the debut album by the Brooklyn band DIIV, released on June 26, 2012, on Captured Tracks. Zachary Cole Smith wrote and produced it, with Daniel James Schlett recording and mixing, across 2011 and 2012.
Smith wrote much of it in a cramped Bushwick painter's studio over a hot summer. The result is reverb-soaked dream pop with krautrock pulse and interlocking guitars, with vocals treated as texture. Smith has said he wanted the lyrics to feel like universal truths and not personal confession.
Critics were warm: Pitchfork gave it 8.3 and NME gave it 9 out of 10. The album went briefly out of print in 2014 over legal issues with the original cover art, and was reissued in June 2015 with new artwork.
