Biography
DIIV is an American band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2011 as a vehicle for the songs of Zachary Cole Smith, a Connecticut native who had previously played guitar in Soft Black and drums for Beach Fossils.[1]
The project began as Dive, after a Nirvana song, and changed its name to DIIV in May 2012 partly out of respect for a Belgian industrial group of the same name.[1] Its debut, Oshin, followed on Captured Tracks on June 26, 2012.[2] Smith wrote much of it in a cramped Bushwick painter's studio over a hot summer.[3]
Later albums include Is the Is Are (February 5, 2016), Deceiver (October 4, 2019) and Frog in Boiling Water (May 24, 2024).[1] Two days before Is the Is Are was released, Smith announced he was entering long-term inpatient treatment, and the band cancelled the rest of a European tour in March 2016 over an urgent health issue.[1] Their influences span shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive), krautrock (Neu!, Can) and post-punk (Joy Division, The Cure).[1]
