Surfer Rosa
About this Album
Surfer Rosa is the debut full-length album by the Pixies, produced and engineered by Steve Albini and released by 4AD in the UK on March 21, 1988.[3]
The band booked roughly ten working days at Q Division in Somerville, Massachusetts, in late 1987, and Albini charged $1,500 and took no royalties.[3] His method was to capture the band playing together in a room, and Kim Deal's backing vocals on "Where Is My Mind?" were recorded in a tiled bathroom for natural echo.[3]
The lyrics borrow from surrealist film and treat violence as a metaphor for inner turmoil. The album reached number two on the UK Indie Chart, drew near-universal praise, and shaped Nirvana's approach to songwriting and to the recording of In Utero.[3]
